The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (DMR), and the Mississippi State Department of Health extended the existing beach advisory in Harrison County to the west from Third Avenue (Henderson Point) in Pass Christian on the west to Azalea Avenue in Biloxi on the east.  This area had significant amounts tar mats and tar patties on the shoreline.  MDEQ and the Beach Monitoring Task Force recommend that people avoid contact with oil-related materials such as tar balls and tar mats and stay out of the water if these materials are visible.

Harrison County
Harrison County Officials would like to remind residents of the area who are boaters to be mindful of the many oil booms that are in place around the coastal waterways.

The ongoing response to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill includes using a variety of tactics to protect shorelines along Mississippi Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle.

Be safe on the water! Please stay clear of the boom both on beaches and in open water. Boom has been placed to protect environmentally sensitive and strategic areas and damaging or removing the boom puts those areas at risk. Crossing boom can cause serious damage to vessels. If you see damage or displaced boom, immediately report it to local law enforcement or over marine band radio VHF channel 16 to the U.S. Coast Guard.

For your own safety, please do not handle oil or tar balls: Tar balls are sticky, dark-colored pieces of oil, and should not be handled, but should be reported to: (866)448-5816

Please do not handle wildlife! If you suspect wildlife has been impacted by oil, please report it to: (866) 557-1401

The City of Pass Christian has placed a boom on the inside outer edge of the Pass Christian Municipal Harbor. The harbor remains open; however, boat owners who have the ability to move their boats out of the water are urged to do so. This will help reduce their chances of having to decontaminate their boats if oil does make it past the boom and inside the harbor.

Dead wildlife has been spotted on the beach in Pass Christian. DO NOT TO TOUCH any wildlife that you may find. Please report any dead or contaminated wildlife in the Pass Christian area to the Pass Christian Harbor office at 228-452-5128. Please note the time and exact location.
